Taliban Issues New National Rules

Women need chaperones and music is banned.

This past week, a spokesman for the leader of the Taliban said that music will be banned in Afghanistan and women will need a male chaperone if they travel alone. The new rules are “building the future,” he said.

“If they go to school, the office, university, or the hospital, they don’t need a mahman,” he said, explaining that women need a mahman during journeys of three days or longer. Mahman is a male chaperone. Earlier this week, he warned that employed women in Afghanistan must temporarily stay indoors until Taliban trains their security forces on “how to deal with women.”

He also explained that music in Afghanistan will be banned as it is “forbidden in Islam,” adding that “we’re hoping that we can persuade people not to do such things, instead of pressure them.”

He said, “We want to build the future, and to forget what happened in the past.”

It is the intent of the Taliban to strictly apply Sharia law.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For the president and his administration as they face the fast-approaching deadline for withdrawal from Afghanistan.
  • For the State Department, U.S. and allied military working to safely evacuate Americans and others.
  • For the women and children in Afghanistan, particularly girls, and how they will be treated under the Taliban rule.
  • For the Afghan people who, across the 20 years of war, have experienced Western lifestyles, music, technology, and more, and how they will respond to the imposition of strict Sharia law.
